He was alleged to j, have stolen a gramaphone. A sergeant and constable saw him carrying it, and gave chase, but lost their man. They afterwards learned that he had gone to Kaiapoi. A constable went in pursuit, but the young fellow saw him and again bolted and s lost. t Yesterday Detective Gibson traced o him to a house on North Avon road, e Four of the police visited the place a at 10 o'clock, last night. A woman ii answered the knock, but refused to c open the door. The house was closely n watched for a time, and when a man h answered from within the police tie- e manded admittance, but the man de- ] nied that the person searched for was t in the house, and declined to allow p a search to be made. He was told I he would be arrested also if he ob- o structed, and two policemen entered s the hcuse. The rooms were searched (: fruitlessly, but a skylight was noticed i leading to the roof.
