PAHIATUA NEWS.
(Frcm Oar Resident Reporter). Tuesday. The residence of Mr Hugh Kelly, of Ridge road, Scarborough, was burned down this afternoon. No particulars are yet available. A movement is on foot to procure a daily mail service between Pahiatua .and Pongaroa. A meeting of the Pahiatua Branch of the Mew Zealand Farmers' Union will be held in the Commercial Hotel on Saturday afternoon next, when amongst other business, Mr T. Quirk, who attended the Provisional Conferenc3 at Wellington, will give a resume of the work done at the Conference. Many farmers will no doubt attend the meeting and hear Mr Quirk's remarks. A football match between the Dannevirke Sub-union and East Coast played at Herbertville, on Saturday, resulted m a draw, no score being recorded by either side. The death of Mrs McCormack is reported at Woodviile. The deceased was a very old resident of Woodviile, having lived there for about twenty years. She came to the Dominion about 40 years ago. Mr A. McFarlane, Chairman of the Ballance Dairy Company, w,-,* resent at the meeting of dairy delegates held in Dannevirke on Saturday last. Tne recent rsin has brought down a large slip in the Manawatu Gorge at the part known as Barney's Point. The Hon. G. Fowlds, Minister of Education, will arrive in Pahiatua by the mail train to-morrow (Wednesday) to take part in the official opening of the new school. At the School Committee meeting held last evening the Headmaster (Mr ThomasV attended and detailed the arrangements made for the ceremony, and also for the social to be held in the Drill Hall in the evening. The proceeds from the social will go towards improving the playground. A good programme has been arranged and as the object is a deserving one a large attndance is anticipated. Ihe ceremony in the afternoon will com] mence at 2.30 o'clock, and parents are invited to attend.
A meeting of the Rexdale Dairy Company was held in the Mangamaire School last evening, Mr E. Bodmin presiding. The Provisional Directors reported the purchase of the Masterton Dairy Company's creamery near the railway station at a satisfactory figure ta the new Company. The Articles of the Association were read and approved, Mr J. Oaburn-Lilly being in attendance to explain legt;l matters. The bank guarantee and the guarantee with regard to the number of cows were signed by all intending shareholders, ard 600 shares were applied for. The statutory rneerting of the Company will be held in a month's time. Messrs E. Bodmin and J. Brechin were appointed a works committee, and were authorised to employ an architect and builder, the work of converting the creamery into a cheese factory will be proceeded with as soon as possible, so that cheest may be manufactured at the commencementt of the coming season. Messrs Dalgety and Co., Ltd., report as follows on their Pahiatua sale of to-day:—Sheep did not come forward up to advertised numbers, but we sold everything under the hammer at the following rates: — Cull. ewes in lamb, 8s 9d; good mixed hoggets, to 10s 9d; fat and forward empty ewes, 9s Id; 2-tooth wethers, fair, lis Gd. Our cattle yarding consisted mainly of dairy . sorts. Two year heifers, backward, £2 2s to £3 13s; 3 year dairy heifers near profit, £4 ss, £5 16s, £5 ss, £5 2s 6d; £5 Is, £4 10s, £4 ss, to £4; speyed forward conditioned heifers, £3 Is; store cows, to £2 15s; cows, Sentember calvers, £4 10s. Messrs lAbraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their Pahiatua sale to-day as follows:—We had an exceptionally good yarding of both sheep and cattle, the quality throughout being very good. The attendance was large, Wairarapa and Manawqtu buyers being in evidence, and all classes of both sheep and cattle were keenly compated for. We quote:— Two tooth to f f.m. ewes in lamb, 16s 4d; mixed aged ewes in lamb, 14s 2dto 15s 6d; f.m. ewes in iamb, 9s 6d to lis lid; 2 tooth and 4 tooth wether 3, 12s 4d; woolly wether hog-
