CARTERTON NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). Monday. A letter received from Mr and Mrs G. W. Deller s who are at present visiting the Old Country, 1 states that they are enjoying a pleasant trip and good health. i Mr and Mrs W. H. Franks and family, of Farkvale, will leave on Thursday for Taranaki. They purpose following farming at Hawera. St. Mark's choir will shortly be strengthened by the addition of a number of boys, who are at present undergoing special training. The road sweeper purchased by the Borough Council was delivered to-day. The ratepayers sincereiy it will be somewhat cheaper than the two-men method of cleaning High Street. A fire at an early hour this morning gutted the back portion of Mrs j. Grengor's Camnethan isursmg Home. Fortunately at the time of the outbreak there were j no patients in the

institution, and no wind was blowing. The brigade turned out promptly, and aided by a strong pressure of water prevented the flames from spreading to the main portion of the building, which was considerably damaged by water. The wash-house, kitchen, and a bedroom, together with the contents, were completely destroyed, the contents of the other portion of the building being salvaged. The State Office holds an insurance of £9OO on the building, and £SOO on the furniture. The damage is estimated at over £2OO. The Hastings Poultry Show concluded on Saturday, the Carterton exhibitors being fairly successful. Mr E. B. Eagle secured a third for a white leghorn cock, and Mrs A. Meyrick a second for a hen and third for a pullet. In partridge wyandottes, Mr R. J. Chapman secured a firat, third, and h.c. in the cock class, and a second for a hen, and third for a pullet. Mr C. R. P. Armstrong secured two firsts, a second, and v.h.c. in the utility class, the birds being judged on the Gordon improved system. Mrs A. Meyrick was awarded a first for a Pebin drake, and a first, special, and second in the Pekin duck class.
