PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Oar Resident Reporter). Monday. A meeting of the Stewards of the Woodlands Hunt Club wss held in the Commercial Hotel, on Saturday evening last, when matters relating to the steeplechase meeting on August 4th were fully discussed. The Club decided to retain the gates and hooks, and the matter ofirefreshmentfl was left in the hands of Mr Rodney. It was decided to make the usual charge of Is at the gates, the grandstand charge to be 2s 6d fur gentlemen, and ladies free. The secretary was instructed tu write and thank the Pahiatua Racing Club for granting the Club the use of the course. The following are the officials for the meeting:—Judge, Mr J. Breeds; handicapper, Mr U. Shannon; starter, Mi vV. VV. McCardie; clerk of scales, Mr V. Prosser; clerk of course, Mr A. Larsen; stewards, Messrs V. Prosser, W. W. McCardie, J. McCardie, C. Vincent, W. Yule, E. Darley, L. Johansen, T. Mexted, S. V. Rodney, P. J. Quirk and .Bruce McEwen, G. S. Buick and D. Buick. j nr., from Palmerston Branch; leading in stewards, first horse Mr C. Arrow, sceuud horse L. Johansen, third horse Captain Whyte; number steward, Mr T. Msxted; blackboard, Mr E. Darley; saddla cloth, Mr C. Vincent; starter's steward, Mr Bruce McEwen; bookmaker stewards, Messrs J. McCardie and A. E- Brown; hurdle stewards, Messrs Yule and Darley; assistant secretary, Mr G. Haw ley ■Drew. Messrs Darley and Yule were appointed to assist with the issuing of emergency riders' certificates, and Messrs Rodney, Larsen, Yule Brown and Johansen were asked to erect the steeplechase course. The last run of the Woodlands Hunt. Club will be held on Saturday next over 'Mr T. Mexted's property at Mangatainoka. Last Saturday a successful run was held at Mr C. Avery's property, and 'although the ground was very slippery, there were no spills. The following took part in the hunt: —The Huntsman, Mr H. Russell (on Maringa); Deputy Master, Mr A. E. Brown (on Duda), G. Ranby (All Gold), R. Shaw (Miss Hippo), G. Webb (Black Bush), H. Hunt (Corroborate), L. Verry on a brown mape, W. H. Russell (Daisy Bell), A. Larsen (Reka), and C. Bull (Waikuku). The drag was laid by Mr G. Buchanan on Vendetta.
Considerable interest is being taken by the ladies of the various Hockey Clubs who have entered for the Ladies' Hockey Tournament on Wednesday next. On Saturday afternoon a hockey match between Oete and Pahiatua, played on the latter's ground, resulted i" a draw, both sides scoring three goals each.
The football match for a dinner between the Konini and Pahiatua on Wednesday promises to be a very exciting game as both sides are putting in very strong teams.
Messrs Abraham and Williams and Dalgety and Co. haye large entries of both sheep and cattle for their stock sale to-morrow. A meeting of the Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce was held in Mr Tosswill's office this afternoon, when it was decided to ask the Masterton delegate, who is attending the Conference fn Wellington on Thursday next, to bring under the Minister's notice, the urgency of continuing! the Wellington-Masterton afternoon train on td Woodville, as it will be of great benefit to' settlers in the Bush district.
