POWNALL STREET.
Despite the fact that the ratepayers recently rejected the proposed loan of £12,000. the condition of Pownall street really demands attention. Extensive quagmires now render the street both impassible and somewhat dangerous. Pownall street is not a credit to the feorough Council. The ratepayers have already voted loan money to bo expended on the street, and the Council pledged themselves to expend the money in the direction mentioned. The money has gone, and Pownall street is in a worse state than v. hen the loan money for improving it was sanctioned by'the ratepayers. This is a matter that, calls for explanation. But why is the street now in a condition that may be described in that somewhat expressive phrase "something awful?" The answer is that certain residents in the vicinity were allowed to take soil out of the street for gardening purposes. Now, however;anxious the Council may be to encourage horticulture some measure of justice should at least be extended to tha burgesses generally who use Pownall street. The money borrowed for a definite purpose has not been expended, and the state of the street has been rendered a great deal worse than .it would otherwise have been through' the Council giving the permission already referr?d to. The Council should, therefore, as a matter of justice, make an effort to improve the ptreet, by patching it up sufficiently to a!l )W of vehicular traffic proceeding along k with ivasomble safety and despatch..
