PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter). ( Saturday. Quite a mild sensation was caused in town this morning, when it became known that a burglary had taken place during the night, and that between £4 and £5 in cash had been 3tolfen from the cash box in the safe at the Pahiatua Borough Council Chambers. The padlock' had been broken off »;he iron door and 'several boxes were opened, but so far as can be ascertained, no papers of value were disturbed, the thief evidently being after money. The police have the matter in hand, but so far there is no clue of the culprit. Very little -:ash is kept at the Council Chamber at all, wages, etc., are paid by cheque. The Pahiatua School Committee will meet in Mr 1, R. Wills' rooms on Monday evening, when further arrangements will be made regarding the official opaning and social on Wednesday next. At the Pahiatua Debating Society last evening, there were five entrants for the competitive speeches, the comnetition being won by Miss Stormont, who gave a splendid speech. Messrs Oxley, Hawkins and the Rev. Chalmers Mill acted as judges. Owing to the drizzling rain during the last two days, the road to the railway station is in a very sloppy condition, and the recently completed footpath is showing signs of daily ase. ' Mr Sharman, the local librarian is unfortunately confined to hi? bad through illnesg, and Mr Henry is acting in his Mr Sharman's many friands will wish him a speedy recovery.
For the fourth year in succession the Woodville Senior Football Club have won the Hunter Challenge Shield.
No senior football mutches were played to-day in connection with the Bush Rugby Union. Although Mangatainoka are leading by one point for the Bush Union banner, they have played one more match than either Konini or Nireaha, and it is expected that a keen fight between the three mentioned teams for the possession of the banner will take place. Inquiries are being made in the local market for pigs. , Messrs Mitchell and Co., auctioneers, will hold a sale of huiding timber at the Mangatainoka timber yards en Wednesday, July 28th. The timber to be offered consist;) of 60,000 feet of dressel heart o.b. rimo, matai, totara, and rata. Those in want of good building timber would do well to attend this sale.
