PROTECTION OF HOMING PIGEONS.
(To the* Editor). Sir,— Owing t&" the somewhat numerous cases of homing pigeons being'shot by so-caHedf "sportsmen," during the last season, It seems to me that a timely warning may have tbpr effect of checking this unmanly practise of shooting down or otherwise tampsring with these useful birds. Not only have cases of this occured whilst the birds have been m the course of training, but also event during the races. Section 57 of "The Animals Protection Act, .1908," is aw follows"Every person who intentionally or negligently shbotd, bilfp, disables, ensnares, or otherwise injures any homing pigeon oa a conviction to a fine not exceeding £lO. Farther, the Act goes on say that the Magistrate, before whom any prosecution takes place, may in addition to the fine imposed, direct payment by the defendant tor such owner, of such damage or tha amount of such injury. It is to be hoped that in future no cases off this sort will arise.—l am, etc., FANCIER. Masterton, July 16th. *
