The Archbishop of Canterbury strongly opposed the motion, which was withdrawn after the Marquis of Lansdowne had supported a suggestion by Lords Halifax and Lorebiirn (Lord Chancellor) as to the desirability ol the appointment of a Royal Commission to enquire into the whole subject, including, as Lord Lorebum remarked, the publi* cation of "a mass of dirty stuff" in some newspaners.
