MASTERTON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. The Council of the Masterton Chamber of Commerce met yesterday, afternoon. There were present:*— Messrs G. C. Summerell (Chairman), J. B. Keith, M. Caselberg, V. Donald. J. C. Ewington and F. W. Carey. The Treasurer reported a creditbalance of £4 5s 9d. A circular was received from the Secretary of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce in reference to the conference of British Chambers of Commerce delegates in Sydney in September next. Mr D. Donald wrote from Sydney in reference to the Congress, stating that if he could be allowed to represent the Masterton Chamber,, in accordance with the Chamber's desire, he would be very happy to devote the fullest time to the duties of delegate to such an important congress. The writer hoped Masterton would succeed in its efforts to have a representative at the congress. The Secretary of the Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce wrote to state that the deputation to the Minister of Railways in reference to the railway time-table, would interview the Minister on the 22nd inst. at r.oon. The Hastings Chamber of Commerce wrote to ask what steps, if anv, the Chamber intended to take in reference to the Government land values, which the Hastings Chamber considered too high. The Chairman said that the matter was really not one so inuch for the Chamber as for the individual. Landowners could object, though their objections were almost always not sustained. Mr Caselberg considered that there seemed to be no reason for complaint in this district, Mr Ewington said that at least there was no evidence of such comi plaints.

On the motion of Mr Caselberg, it was decided to write to the Hastings Chamber to this effect. Mr Ewington said that a committee was recently suggested to be set up by the Chamber to further the question of opening up and extending certain important lines of road from Masterton to various • surrounding country centres. Mr Ewington moved that Messrs C. E. Daniel, Donald and the mover, be appointed to discuss and report on the matter. —Carried.
