PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Oar Resident Reporter). Thursday. A hockey match played yesterday between the Kotoroa, and Huia Ladies' Clubs resulted in a win for Kotoroa by 4 goals to nil. After the match buth teams were entertained to afternoon tea at Mr Manifolds. Record nominations 'have been received for the Woodlands Hunt Club's Steepechase meeting on Augustjlth, entries having been received from Wairarapa and Palmerston North. Weighta will be declared on July 29th. A football team from Pahiatua journeyed to Konini yesterday, and after a good game succeeded in beating the home team by 15 points -to 14. The Volunteer social held in the Woodville Drill Hall, last evening was a mojt successful function, over 100 couples being present. Visitors were present from Palmerston North, Dannevirke and Pahiatua. There was a good attendance at the annual social of the Mangatauioka Football Club, held in the Library Hall, last evening. Arrange, ments for the social were carried out successfully by an energetic committee. Good music was supplied by Mr Hicks and extras were played by Miss Dunn and Mr Brind. Mis? Dunn and Mr Briud also rendered songs during the evening. Mr J. McTavish made a capable M.C. At Konini Hall, last evening, a ploasnt social was held in aid of the hall funds. Music for dancing was played by Mrs W. Britland, Miss E. Bissett and Master Frank Kelly. Songs were sung by Mr G. Smith and Frank and Girlie Kelly. Mr A. Best made an efficient M.C. I understand that a hockey tournament will be held at Pahiatua on Wednesday and that five teams will compete. From particulars received from Rakanui concerning the fatal accident which occurred to Mr John Wallace, it appears that Mr WaMace was driving a dray and three horses with a load of stores along the road to Wai-n-waka, when it is presumed that the horse 3 £shied>nd overturned the dry into about four feet of soft mud, that had previously been scooped off the road, as when found Wallace was lying face downwards in the mud, with part of the dray on top of him, and h 9 had apparently been suffocated. The deceased, who was about 25 years of age, will be greatly missed in the Rakanui district, where he had resided for soma considerable time, and much sympathy is felt for his relatives. The deceased was a prominent footballer and ha 3 played in all the teams belonging to the Puketoi Unoin, and this year he threw in hib lot with Rakanui. He was twice picked as full-back in the representative matches. At the inquest held before M J. Berry (Acting Coroner) and a jury consisting of Messrs C. McKenzie (foreman) and A. F. Koidley, C. H. Dickens, J. G. Woodhuuse, G. H. West and W. H. McA voy, a verdict was returned that Wallace met his death through suffocation.
