THE UNEMPLOYED.

By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 13. Twenty-four men commenced work for the Citizens' Relief Committee at Victoria College grounds to-day. More will be put on as speedily as possible. The Citizens' Fund is now approaching £6OO. The Government has extended

terms of its subsidy to embrace any useful work carried out by public

subscription. A deputation waited on the Finance Committee of the Wellington Harbour Board to-day, urging that pending works be pushed on as Epeedily as possible. The deputation met with a sympathetic reception. It being pointed out at the meeting of the Hospital I'rustees to-day that the work at Victoria College will improve the property owned by the Trustees, authority was given for a subsidy not exceeding £25 to be paid. The Wellington Presbytery to-day passed resolutions recommending that collections for the unemployed be taken up in the congregations. Some statements made at a rscent citizens' meeting were criticised by members of the Presbytery who combatted the argument that standard wages should be paid for relief works, it being feared this would lead to others out of employment rushing to Wellington. Rev. J. K. Elliott said that he thought five shillings per day would be a fair thing under the present conditions.
