OBITUARY.
THE LATE MR R.' D. DAG«. One of Mastertcn's earliest and most rrepectsd settler, Mr R. D. Dagg, who had attained the ripe age of 83. passed quietly away yesterday evening at about 7 o'clock. The deceased had been ailing for 1 some time past, and the end w as, consequently, not unexpected. The late Mr Dagg was one of those strenuous and capable settlers who performed real pioneer work in the "breaking in" of "God's Own Country." Some 50 years ag* he arrived in New Zealand from the Old Country, and was one of the earliest isettleis in the Wairarapa, who literally carved their way over the Rimutaka and up the Wairarapa Valley. Farming in those days was not the pleasant occupation that it is nowadays in most cases, but the deceased j gentleman, who had been educated at an agricultural college in England, and was generally well read, toiled n bravely and successfully. A good many years ago the late Mr Dagg took a great deal of interest in public matters, and was one of the originators of the Mastertor Small Farms Settlement scheme. He was, also, associated with the Masterton Road Board and other local bodies. He leaves a family of eight children, four sons and four daughters, to mourn their loss. They are Messrs H. J. Dagg (Mauriceville), R. J. Dagg, J. G. Dagg and J. T. Dagg (Masterton), and Mesdames G. H. Graham, De Lisle and E. J. Rose (Masterton) and Mrs Townson (Gisborne). The funeral will take place to-morrow.
