MASTERTON'S NEW SALEYARDS.
IS SOLWAY VICINITY SUITABLE?
OPINIONS AT AN A. AND P. MEETING. During the progress of the business at the meeting of the Mastert>n A. and P. Association General Committee, on Saturday, the question of whether the saleyards for Masterton were to be removed to near Solway Showgrounds came up incidentally.
Mr J. C. McKillop said he hoped that the proposed idea would not be consummated. Speaking as a farmer on the north side of Masterton he said he and his end of the district were all opposed to the saleyards being removed to Solway. He did not know whether anything definite had been fixed upon, having only really heard in an indirect way what was contemplate! Mr A. J. Percy said lie, too, was strongly opposed to the removal of the saleyards to near Solway. He could tell the meeting that already a petition was in circulation among formal to protest against the re-
movHi. Mr .) oh. Moi'ris said he, too, opposed the change. The Chairman stated that so far as the Association was concerned it was not itself concerned in the matter at all. The Association had set up a committee to interview the auctioneers to ascertain their Intentions for the purpose of knowing where it stood in the matter of approaching the Railway Department for a siding near Solway. Mr 0. C. Cooper, after the meeting had formally closed, took advantage of the occasion to point out that the auctioneers had, after full consideration of the whole question, decided that the site near Solway was, in most resoects. the best for their purposes. The idaa was for all the auctioneering firms to hold their sales on the one day, which would be to the advantage of their clients. J The site mentioned was out of the borough, near the town, and near the railway. The objection to yards at the north end of the town was the distance from the railway. However, he and the other auctioneers had an open mind on the matter, and he would be pleased to hear any opinions on the point. Several members pointed out that though the Association had no direct interest in the removal of the saleyards to near Solway, it stood to benefit very greatly by the change. Ihis was admitted by Mr Percy. No opinions, adverse or otherwise, were offered in response to Mr Cooper's invitation, and the meeting dispersed.
