GAS.
(To the 'Editor^, Sir,—One does not like to take to task for incompetency any public offical, but when glaring facts arise, one can arily commend the stand taken by CrsfHoar and Prentice, as regards the "weak-kneed" constitution of the Gas Committee, ;and the gas staff generally. The "Gassers Committee" *woilid (be more applicable, but I do not wish to be vulgar. It is only a few months since, that the powers that be discharged from the works, a young man who was recognised as a reliable and competent hand, on the; trivial ground that work was short, and that "married" men must have the preference; consequently "Single" Jimmy got-shot out. In principle that was no doubt the correct thing, but before "Single" Jimmy had left the works the "gasbags" took on another "Single" Johnny in his place, and strange to say that Johnny is a soh of one of the members of the Gas Committee. Strange ain't it? This ,is only by the way. To come to the point. Whilst the "gassers" and the Councillors are arguing about the appointment of the gas collector -this young man is sent round to read the meters, and he did so with a result tnat is slarming —to the Council, not to the writer. From the account before me just rendered tor last month's consumption, I find my bill has lessened just close on 1,000 per cent. Good. Also Hooray. Possibly the beautiful fine nights and the long aunny days at present experienced will account for it. Either that, or the gas reader is capable making serious mistakes, and if the latter, the Gas Committee will be suffering with ithat tired feeling ere long. The account is open, Mr Editor, for your .inspection should you desire it.—l am, etc., JUST GAS.
