A SALUTARY FINE.
AN IMPRUDENT YOUNG MAN,
A voung man. named Arthur Jones was charged before Mr C. C. Graham, S.M., at Masterton, yeaterday with having supplied Maria Donaldson, a prohibited person, with .liquor. Defendant did not appear. Sergeant Miller stated that he visited the house of the woman, and found her drunk, Jones being there in the same room. Defendant said that he was keeping the woman, and that the house was being rented by him, everything in it being his. He flatly denied having brought the liquor, and said that one Maurice Cronin did so. Witness replied that Cronin was in gaol, and could'not have been done so, at the same time advising defendant to clear>out. The Bench asked if Jones had been previously convicted. "Oh ves," replied the Sergeant, "he is well-known here, young.as he is. He has bee.n previously charged with procuring liquor for a prohibited person, and was then fined £lO. He has been twice fined £2 for assault, and recently completed a sentence of two months for assaulting an old man." The Magistrate remarked that it seemed a very bad case. It was bad enough for prohibited persons to procure liquor for themselves. The maximum penalty of £lO was again imposed on defendant. (The alternative fixed by the Act for non-pay-ment of the fine is two month's'imprisonment).
