PROPOSED TATTERSALL'S CLUB.
DEPUTATION TO THE ACTINGPREmIER. By Telegraph—Press Association. W ELLINuTON, July 9. A deputation of clergymen and laymen waited on the Acting-Premier to-night in reference to the proposed Tattersall Club in Wellington. They believed a charter would be asked for. and they desired tn enter a protest against it being granted. It was also urged that if a club was established it would defeat the intention of the Government's legislation of 1907, which had been successful in closing bookmaking offices. In reply Mr Carroll said that if a chrater was asked for it would be refused. He could not see how the Government could interfere with the establishment of a Tattersall's Club, but it there was anything to show that the club was used for gambling purposes the representations of the deputation would receive every consideration.
