BRITISH ARMY AND ITS COST.
It is estimated that the British Army In the year 1909-1910 will cost £27,485,000. This is £24,000 less than in the preceding year, but it includes the cost of many important charges paid for by equally important retrenchments. £300,000 more is paid by India towards the upkeep of the British Army, and forces have been withdrawn from South Africa. " This large sum of money pays for the total strength of the Home and Colonial Regular establishments, which number 183,200 as against 185,000 in 1908-9; also the Territorials, which on December ,31st, 1908, numbered 8,623 officers, and 199,059 men; but it excludes the men in India, paid for by the Indian Government. 1 Here are some of the chief items in the military bill:— Pay \ of the Army, £8,527,000; Territorial forces, £2,307,000; transports and remounts, £1,665,000; supplies and clothing, £4,275,000; armaments, £1,644,000; works and {[buildings, £2,551,000; the War Office, £593,000; non-effective) services, £3,788,000.
