PAHIATUA NEWS.
(Firom Oar Resident Reporter). Thursday. PAHIATUA HOSPITAL TRUSTEES. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua Hospital Trustees was held in the Council Chambers, this afternoon. There were present: —Messrs J. D. Wilson (Chairman), H. Eames, Godfrey Taylor, G> Burgess. K. McLennan, S. Bolton, J. J. Boagey and G. Hawley Drew (secretary). Dr. Dawson was also Sn attendance. The Doctor's report stated that everything w«a in good order at the hospital, and there were no complaints. The secretary in his report stated that some horses had got into the grounds during the past month, and he asked that a wicket gate be put in at the lower end of the grounds, so that all gates could then fee locked up every evening. The report was adopted with the exception of erecting a wicket gate, and it was decided to ask the owners of the horses ; for compensation for the damage done to the grounds, ns the same thing occurred last winter. I It was decided to increase the matron's salary to £95 per annum as Jrom May Ist, 1909. The visiting committee rnporte re the complaints made, that they had gone very fully into the matter, and could not find any evidence to substantiate the complaints made against the staff. The report of the daily average cost of the three hospitals in the Wairarapa district was worked out by the secretary as follows:—Masterton Hospital, individuals treated 231, average day's stay 24.11, daily average cost 6s llfd; Pahiatua Hos- . pilal, 133, 25.5, 6s 10|d; South Wairarapa Hospital, 5, 29.67, 9s sd. Daily average cost after deducting patient's payment: —Masterton 6s , 2£d, Pahiatua 5s Ofd, South Wairarapa 8s OJd. These figures relate to the period from April Ist, 1907, to March 81st, 1908. There are ten patients, four males and six females in the Hospital at the preaent date. Accounts amounting to £B4 5s lOd were passed for payment. GENERAL. Before holding a wet practice on Tuesday evening, the'members of the Fire Brigade assembled and discussed the question of coping with an outbreak of fire at the Pahiatua Hospital. That institution is a considerable distance from the Briagde shed, arid although a fire plug is put in near the hospital, it would only be of use, in the 2ase of fire, after the brigade had arrived£on the scene with the reel and hose. It was decided to make a trial, and after allowing for emergencies, it was found that it would take fifteen minutes for the Brigade to arrive on the scene after an alarm had been-given. By this" time the fire would have a very big start, and in an institution such as the hospital, where the patients would not be able in many cases to help themselves, the Brigade thought it viould be be advisable if the Tiospital authorities could see their way clear to have a length of hose and hydrant put [in front of the building, in which case a man swould be able to turn the water on, in a very short time. The Brigade are to be congratulated on bringing this subject up, and on making a demonstration in this respect, as it is a matter of considerable importance. The cost of connecting the water, as above stated, would not be great, and no doubt the Hospital Trustees will take this matter in hand. ,A special meeting of the Pahiatua Racing Club Committee will be held in the Commercial Hotel on Tuesday ' next, at 4 p.m., when the matter of leasing part of the ground for show purposes will be further discussed. The Catholic Social, which is always looked upon 8s one of the principal functions of the year, will be held hi the Drill Hall on July 28th. In the Woodville district during the quarter ending June 30th there were 20 births, 3 deaths, and 5 marriages. The Salvation Army juveniles, "the Riroriros," will pay a return visit to Pahiatua next week. The mission services in the Presbyterian Church are drawing large congregations every evening. During laat night's service, a solo was well rendered by Mise C. S&yers. Tomorrow" (Friday) evening the mission will conclude with a Iceture on Scotland's poet, "Robert Burns."
Anniversary services will be held in the Methodist Church on Sunday next. The sealed handicap in connection with the Golf Club, for a trophy presented by Mr M. Quirke, was played on the local links yesterday, and was won by Mr G. Harold Smith.
