POSITION IN WELLINGTON. 1,087 UNIONISTS OUT OF WORK By Telegraph—Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 7. Inquiries among union senretar cs show that there are at least 1,087 unionists out of work in Wellington, but a complete statement would show more.. The 1,087 are made up cf wharf labourers, 500; seamen, 200; carpenters, 677; painters, 55; drivers, 40; cooks and waiters, 50; compositors, 20; letter press machinists, 20, plasterers, 15; grocers assistants, 10. A meeting of women convened by the Mayoress, Mrs Newman, was held to-day, to form a women's committee to augment the citizens un employed fund. About 25 attended, and set up a committee. The citizens fund now totals about £2OO. MEETING OF UNEMPLOYED AT NAPIER. By Telegraph—Press Association. NAPIER, July 7. A meeting of unemployed in Napier was held this afternoon, and about seventy men enrolled their names as being out of work. A.good many of these are comparatively recent arrivals. It was stated that the Labour Department's representative had received instructions to send five married men to work at Gisborne. A resolution was passed requesting assistance from the Borough Council, and offering to accept a shilling per hour if the General Labourers' Union consented to this step. | It was also decided to aak the Pub- ' lie Works Department to have the in- ' terior of public buildings painted so 1 as to relieve unemployed painters.
