The third Test Match was resumed to-day ?t Leeds, in lovely weather, and with a good wicket. Sharp and Tyldesley, the two not out men, continued the Englishmen's innings. The former batted powerfully, knocking up 50 out of the first 91 runs. He hit three fourers in succession off Armstrong.
At 135 Macartney came on in place of Armstrong, and altered the phase of the gam 3. Tyldesley was taken nicely off him in the slips by a righthanded catch, after a chanceless innings. Three for 137. Immediately after Sharp was stumped off 1 the same bowler, after being two hours at the wickets. Four for 146. Maclaren played forward to the Sydneyite, and retired. Five f6r 157. Macartney disposed of Hirst easily. Six for 169. Carter soon afterwards . caught Rhodes finely on the leg side, and Macartney clean bowled Barnes. Brearley added half-a-dozen before the Sydney bowler found his way in, the innings closing for 182 runs. Scores:— * ENGLAND. Fir,st Innings. , The Australians commenced their second innings after the adjournment. Gregory went at the first ball, before a run had*been registered. Ransford joined M'A lister, but the latter was caught easily at short leg by Sharp. Two for 41."" At 28 Brearley replaced Barnes. Armstrong, who foil >wed M'Alister, was slow in getting to work. v >. Barnes* second ball found Hansford's leg stump. The'.Victorian had taken 80 minutes to compile 24, and his partnership with Armstrong had lasted 65 minutes. Tnree for 52. filled the vacancy, and the batting became freer, 11 coming off one over. Barnes left, Hirst replacing him, and Sharp was also tried. Both batsmen played steadily till the tea adjournment.* On resuming, Noble put one up to Rhodes off Barnes. Four for 118. Four runs more were , added to the total when Rhodes found Armstrong's wicKet. Trumper and Bardsley were got rid of without trouble, the sixth and seventh wickets falling for 126 and 127. Received July 1 »4, 5.5 p.m. LONDON, July 3. On play being resumed the weather was dull and threatening*. Barnes and Brearley were entrusted with the bowling. Carter added three to his overnight score, and was then caught behind the wickets. He was altogether 50 minutes at ths wickets, and gave arrexcellent display of clean hitting. Nine for 183. Laver was the last man. Hirst displaced Barnes at 2017 -and the end came six runs later, when Macartney played Brearley on. The Sydneyite batted 105 minutes, and gave a fine defensive exhibition, leaver appeared awkward, and gave I a chance when he had scored two to MacLaren in the slips, off Brearley. The innings occupied 290 minutes. Barnes bowled with an excellent length, and turned the ball a little both ways. Fry and Hobbs opened England's second innings, Cotter and Macartney being the bowlers. When each batsman had made 7 Fry played Cotter on. One for 17. Tyldesley followed, and made a similar contribution, being then caught by Macartney off his own bowling, after three or four previous attempts. Two for 26. Sharp joined Hobbs. A double change of bowling was tried, Armstrong and Laver going on. The batting was good till lunch, when the score stood at 2 for 56: Cotter bpwN ed the last over before lunch, andha and Macartney again had charge of the attack on resuming. Hobbs added a couple, and then Cotter bowl id
him. He took 80 minutes to make | 30. Three for 60. A rot now set in, the wickets falling in quick succession. - Maclaren filled the vacancy, only to see Sharp depart bowled by Cotter. Pour for 61. The fifth wicket fell without any addition to the score, Maclaren being dismissed with a smart catch by Cotter at point. Rhodes and Lilley "carried the total to 82, when the latter got his leg in front to Cotter. Six for 82. Hirst played Cotter on before ssoring. Rhodes, who played forceful cricket, was taken by Armstrong in the slip 3, with the total still at 82. »
Brearley and Barnes, the last men, added 5, J-essop being absent ill. beven wickets fell after luncheon in less than an hour for 31 runs. Cotter and Macartney bowled superbly.
