WHY NOT CHANGE THE TUNE?
To the Editor.
Sir,—l am sick and tired of hearing about all that "the trade" has lost by the carrying of no-license, and note tbat in order to exaggerate the alleged losses probable future profits are included in them! For instance, if a publican estimates that he would have made £I,OOO per annum for the next three years he puts down a loss of £3,000 under that head alone. Could anything be more absurd? The licensees have enjoyed their licenses for the full period for which the licenses were issued—they knew from the day tbat they were granted exactly when they would expire, and, further, that there was a very strong probability that they would not be renewed. Every man who goes into the hotel-keeping business goes into it with his eyes wide open—that h if the man has any senae at all—and for years past the possibility of no-license being carried has been imminent. Instead of hearing about the losses, why do we not learn something about the profits that have been made in past years. Perhaps if the licensees had paid lower rents, instead of talking about losses would have told us with pride tbat they had made fortunes in the liquor trade. That is why I a&k, sir, "why not change the tune?" and teil us something about the profits that have been made out of the pockets of the masses.—l am, etc. WEARY WILLIE.
