A ROUGH PASSAGE.
By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, June 29.
The full-rigged ship Leicester Castle was towed into port at midnight in a disabled condition. She left Monte Video on Apri' 12th, in ballast, bound for Newcastle, New South Wales. Eight days later, in a light breeze, she was suddenly overwhelmed by a tidal wave, estimated at 120 ft /high, and thrown on her beam ends. It was fully ten minutes before the vessel righted herself again. The wave was attributed to seismic action. At the end of April the vessel experienced heavy gales and mountainous seas, sustaining consiierable damage to spars, sails and rigging. June 12th. to 16th was'also a period of storm. The fore-topgal-lant mast was caried away, bringing down the topmast head and teh yards. The ship was labouring so much that it was unsafe lor the crew to attempt to clear away the wreckage. A steamer was sighted, and rockets displayed for assistance, but they were not seen. The main top-gallant mast was lost. The weather moderating, the wreckage was cleared away, and the vessel, going beforo the wind, succeeded in reaching the New Zealand coast.
