A MOTORIST'S PERIL.

'Only the arrival of a strong force of police saved the lifd ofMr Hirschbach, a millionaire clothier, whose motor car killed a fourteen*year-old boy in a populous street off Broadway recently (says the London "Daily Mail's" Mew York correspondent). Surrounded by a howling mob, with 'blood streaming from his face and two ladies in the car crying hysterically, he was escorted through a shower of,brickbats to the police station, protesting that the lad's death was purely accidental. New York has been greatly aroused in the last few weeks by the increase in the number of motor car fatalities, a nd any accident to a pedestrian in a l 'populous neighbourhood may, have ' unpleasant results for the motorist. Mr Hirschbach was driving hi? invalid mother and sister to his country seat when one of a group of boys whose playground is the street ran in front of the car. Though travelling slowly, the car could not be stopped in time. The boy was ir.sfcantly killed. His playmates raised a cry, • and 500 people swarmed out from the tenements near by and attacked Mr Hirschbach. The solitary policeman on the spot could only whistle for assistance. When police reserves arrived the motorist's clothes were torn and has head was cut, while hia mother had fainted.
