MEETING OF CREDITORS.

ESTATE OF A REBAY, OP MAURICEVILLE.

A meeting of craditors in the bankrukpt estate. q£ Alfred. Rebay, of ] Maurieeville, was held before the ' D.0.A., Mr VV. B. Chennells, in the Masterton Courthouse, on Saturday morning last. There was no general quorum, the only creditors present . being Messrs Anders Larsen, of Mauriceville, and H. Johnson, of , Masterton. Mr C. A. Pownall represented , bankrupt. Bankrupt's written statement was to the effect that he entered into the business o£ a publican at Maur ceville at the end of October of last year. He purchased the lease and furniture for £1,350, of which £825 was in cash, £4OO secured by mortgage and bill of sale to Burton Brewery Company and Barraud and Abraham, and the balance of promissory note to H. Johnson. He had only been in possession two weeks when prohibition was carried. His credit,, therefore, became limited, snd although he carried on the business as long-as he could, his creditors —no doubt with a view of being paid before ths house was closed —pressed for payment, and he had to file. Had continuance been carried, he was certain he could have been free from debt within the first twelve months. Debtor, examined by the D.0.A., stated that his wife had ro property, and he had no other assets than those mentioned in the state ment. He went into the hotel on October 28th, 1908, with about £BOO. Had No-License not been carried, he held the opinion that he could have sold the place and realised £BOO or £9OO clear. The rent, rates, insurance and license fee amounted to £6 4s a week, of which the rent was £5. His books were a true record of the transactions of the business. The D.O.A. stated that he had instructed Mr C. H. Smith to dispose of as much of the liquor and stock as possible before June 30th. Mr Chennells remarked favourably on the excellent way in which the books After paying the secured creditors, ! there'would, it seemed, be little or 1 nothing in the furniture for the • unsecured creditors. Everything appeared to be in good order in connection with the business.
