PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Oar_Resident_Reportei). Thursday. Between eighty and ninety members and friends of the Pahiatua Debating Society assembled in the Theatre last evening when a social evening was held. During the even- | ang items were rendered by the following ladies and gentlemen- °ongs ( by Mrs Donald and Messrs Godso and Manifold, Mr Burns gave a recitation, a duet was sung by the Misses Sayers, Miss Godso played a pianoforte solo. Later in the evening a prorgessive euchre pcriy was held, and parlour games. The winner of tbe ladies' euchre prize was Miss Bliss, and the men's prize was won by Mr J. D. Wilson. Supper was then partaken of, Mr East being in charge. Afterwards the body of the hall was cleared for dancing, music being supplied by the Misses Cox, Moore, Mrs Eastwood and Mr C. Mills. Messrs Foss and Smith acted as M.'sC. Woodville residents contemplate making extensive improvements to the Drill Hall. It is stated that the hall is the only one of its kind in the Dominion that is free from debt. A youth named Lawson in the employ of the W.F.C.A. cut his l:and yesterday with a lamp globe, the injury necessitating 1: dical attention. A meeting of the committee of the Pahiatua Racing Club will be held in the Commercial Hotel on Saturday evening, at 7 o'clock. There was a fair attendance at the sale of work in the Presbtyerian Church, last evening, despite the unfavourable weather. Good business -was done at the stalls, and the Church Fund will benefit to the extent of about £l2. The ladies'committee desire to thank all those who kindly provided refreshments. A fancy dress carnival in connection with the Skating Club will probably be held at an early datp. The disbandment of the Ruahine "(Woodville) Battalion Band has been Gazetted.

FOOTBALL.

The Puketoi representative term to play the Bush representatives, at Makuri, on Saturday next, is as follows Full-back, A. Hutchings; tbreequarters, E, Aldei ..'ick, F. "West, M. Connor; five-eighth, H. West; half-back, G. Stephenson; wing forwards, G. West, W. Bambry; Forwards, C. McKenzie (Rakanui), S. MeTavish, P. Waddle, G. Fulcher, F. Meech, J. Bambry, C. Balsam. Emergencies —Backs, C McKenzie (Pongaroa), li. Larsen and H. Alderwick; forwards, J. Harris, J. Bellshaw and J. Reynolds. The above team is a fairly strong one, and a good game is anticipate! 4 . Footballers in Puketoi district will be sorry to hear that Mr J. Lankey, a prominent member of the Pongaroa Club, met with a painful accident, he having burst a bloodvessel in his head, which will incapacitate him from further play his season. The following are the remaining fixtures in the first round for the School Shield:—June 26th, Mangatainoka v. Eketahuna, at Mangatainoka; Scarborough Combined v. Ballance, at Pahiatua; Pahiatua "a foye. July 3rd, Mangatainoka v. Pahiatua, at Mangatainoka; Ballance v. Eketahuna at Pehiatua; Scarborough a bye. July 10th, Eketahuna v. Scarborough Combined, at Eketahuna; Pahiatua v. Ballance, at Pahiatua; Managtainoka a bye. The masters in charge are requested to arrange the time for starting the various matches. $£ In view of the contest between Konini and Pahiatua, on Saturday week,-the members of the latter club are requested to attend a practice on the Recreation Ground on Saturday.
