PERSONAL.

Mr W. H. Beetham received a cablegram from England, yesterday, stating that his brother, Mr Georce Beetham, is "steadily improving" from the effect of his recent acci dent.

The many friends of Mr and Mrs Saker will'regret to hear that their son George has entirely lost the use of his left arm, as the- result of the accident he met with at Mr Daniell's mill in March last. The best medical : advice obtainable in Wellington was procured, bat nothing could be done to improve the condition of the arm. Mr Joseph Frederick Ludwig, youngest son of the late Mr C. Ludwig. of Lambton Quay. Wellington, died at Napier yesterday morning. The deceased, who was 45 years of age. was a brother of Mrs P. Hider, of Masterton. Accompanied by her brother from Wellington, Mrs Hider will leave for Napier by the express train at noon to-day. A well-known actress, known as Miss "Georgie" Leighford, who has frequently visited Masterton with theatrical companies, died at the Melbourne Hospital last week, of heart failure. Miss Leighford _at different times played in companies organised-by Mr Alfred Dampier, Mr George Rignold, Mr William Anderson, and Mr Charles Holloway. Her last appearance was with Mr William Anderson's company at the King's Theatre, Melbourne, recently in "Uncle Tom's Cabin." At the Fire Police social in connection with the presentation of medals on Tuesday evening last, eulogistic reference was mad>j by several speakers to the manner in which Captain Dixon had carried out his duties as head of the Fire Police. The Corps was recognised as an excellent body of men, efficiently trained, and having no equal as Fire Police in the DoI minion, and this proficiency was due I to the able manner in which Captain ■ Dixon had instructed and controlled his men. One speaker stated that if it had not been for Captain Dixon's determination, pluck and tact, in the face of considerable opposition, Masterton woull today have been minus a splendid Fire Police a r d Salvage Corps, the value of which local residents were now beginning to recognise.
