™. The Hon. R. J. H. Reeves is seriously ill at Wellington. Mr N. Kettle has been re-elected President of the Hawke's Bay A. and. P. Association. The death has occurred at Wellington of Mr A. P. Boyes, brother of Mr A. W. Boyes, of Eketahuna. t Mr Robert McNab will leave Wellington to-day for his home in Mataura. He takes passage from Bluff on Monday week for Hobart, en route to England which he expects to reach at the end of August. His visit Home is mainly in connection with the research work on which he has been closely engaged since last November. Mr McNab also hopes to obtain first hand some information regarding the working of "the Swiss system of military training, and with this object in view will endeavour to be present at the annual Swiss manoeuvres which take place in the autumn. He will return to New Zealand in February or March next. Mr Robert Halt, timber merchant, of Napier, died on Monday last. He was one of the very earliest settlers in Hawke's Bay. "Holt's Mill'' is a landmark in Napier. Mr Holt originally started his mill in Hastings Street, but, with the extension of business, he removed to a larger site in Carlyle Street, where he had a great many men in his employ. Always a keen'enthusiast in machinery, he made his plant one of the most up-to-date in the Dominion. Timber mills iat Hastings, Piri Piri (L'annevirke) and Puicetitiri are also associated | with his name. Mr Holt leaves a I widow,three sons (Messrs John, Robert and James Holt) and two married daughters, one of whom is the wife of the Rev. 0. Dean, Port Ahuriri. The deceased never took pare in public life. Cr J. Yarr's departure from Masterton was the subject of reference at the Masterton Borougn Council last evening. The Mayor, Mr i J . L, Hollings, said it was generally admitted by councillors, whether they agreed with him in all his views or not, that Cr Yarr had been a valuable municipal representative, who had been a painstaking and capable advocate, and it was universally felt that he would in his new sphere be doubtless as much appreciated in local politics as he was in Masterton. The Mayor moved that a resolution be recorded on the minutes embodying the high appreciation the Council, held of Or Yarr's services. The whole Council spoke to the motion, every councillor .endorsing the good wishes expressed by the Mayor for Cr Yarr's iuture success. The resolution was carried unanimously. Cr Yarr feelingly replied, thanking most heartily the various speakers for | tiusir kii remarks.
