PERSONAL.
Mr Newman, M,P. for Manawatu, was on a visit to Mssterton yesterday. Mr Robert Holt, sawmiller, and a very old settler, of Hawke s Bay, is dead, states a Press Association telegram- , «. Mr H. C. Swan, dentist, of Masterton, underwent a critical operation in a Masterton private hospital last week, and is progressing satisfactorily. Rev. D. C. Bates, F.R.G.S., F.R.M.S., hab b=en appointed Government Meteorologist. He whs assistant to Captain Edwin for sorr e time, and since the captain s retirement has been acting meteorologist. Mr Bates was ordained in 1891, and he still gives assistance as a clergyman of the Anglican Church, but gave up regular church work in 1903. The following changes in the Customs Department have been decided upon:—Mr J. P. Ridings, collector at Invercargill, to be collector at Auckland, vice Mr John Mills, retired on account of ill-health; Mr H. R. Spence, landing surveyor at Auckland, to be collector at Inercargill; Mr A. Penny, collector at Greymoutn, to be landing surveyor at Auckland; Mr W. Devenish, landing waiter at Nelson, to be collector at Greymouth; Mr T. R. Herd, landing waiter at Wellington, to be landing waiter at Nelson.
