PAHIATUA NEWS.
I" (From Oar Resident Reporter). ! Saturday. T he Schoolroom at Mangaramarama was filled the other evening; when the first annual meeting of the Baptist Church was held. During the evening songs ana recitations were rendered and the prizes won by the Sunday School children were presented to the winners. The yearly report was very satisfactory. Owing to the meeting of the Farmers' Freezing Company, this afternoon, the meeting of the Executive of the Pahiatua Central Branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union was postponed. There was a good attendance at the 1 Methodist Church last evening 'when Mr Charteris gave a humour«us lecture on "Life in Glasgow." The Pahiatua Debating Society held their weekly meeting in the Forester's Hall, last evening, and despite counter attractions there was a splendid attendance. A "journal" consisting of original prose and poetry was read, some of t!be items being very instructive, and also showing considerable literary talent. The anniversary services of the -Methodist Church will beheliua he first Sunday in July. FOOTBALL. The Pahiatua Seniors journeyed to Mangatainoka this . afternoon, and •succeeded in defeating the home team by 3 points. In the rirst spell play was uninteresting, and was only towards the close that anything exciting occurred. No score resulted, the home team having the best of the game. The second spell was much faster, and good rushes were initiated by both sides, the ball travelling tip and down the field, and more centre play was indulged in. Pahiatua got the ball in their opponents' territory, and Short at five-eights, from a loose irush, whipped the ball out to Collins, the latter transferring at to Eccletun, who scored near the corner. No goal resulted from the «ick. From this out some smart play was witnessed, and on one occasion Mangatainoka penned Pahiatua in close proximity to their line for several minutes, until a free kick Telieved the situation. Both sides made determined efforts to score, and when the whistle sounded play was near the home team's line.
Mangatainoka did not play with the same dash as on the previous Saturday, while the winning team played much better than they did in the former match with Mangatainoka. For Pahiatua Short played a sterling game, arid was very safe, while Col•lins, Yule Brothers, Eccleton, Fairbrother ard Weatherley did good •work. For the home team E. Harvey, -B. Harvey, Pilkington, J. Dungan and Lyle were noticeable for good work, and Clapham, at full-back, «aved two almost certain scores in the second.spell. Cade, the sprinting anaii of the team, made several goud runs, but was not fed enough. The forwards on both sides were fairly even : Mr Chatwin gave every satisfaction as referee.
