FIRE IN VILLA STREET.
A NARROW ESCAPE.
A PLUCKY RESCUE.
Shortly before mid-day yesterday the firebells pealed out a vigorous alarm. The outbreak proved to be in a house in Villa street, occupied by Mr W. Green, painter. By the time the Brigade arrived on the scene it was found that the fire had obtained a firm hold of the building. The various members of the Brigade, however, set to work with a will, and after a short tim? succeeded in getting the fire under control, although the building was practically gutted. The fire started in a side room which was occupied by an old man named John Kennedy. There was a lighted kerosene stove in the room at the tima. and it is surmised that it exploded, and thus caused th fire. Mr Kennedy had a very narrow escape from being burned to death He wus rescued from his dangerous position by Mrs Green, and a young lady, both of whom were severely burned about the iace. They deserve all praise for their courageous conduct. It was only with the greatest difficulty that the old man was taken from the burning building. The building was insured in the United Insurance Office for £2OO, and the | furniture for £IOO.
