TRAINING IN INDUSTRIAL SCHOOLS.

Some not altogether complimentary references to the training received in industrial schoels were made at the Auckland Supreme Court on Saturday. In appearing for a youth who had been brought up for sentence in connection with the Whakatane post office theft?, Mr J. R. Reed urged that he should not* be committed to an industrial school. Boys, who were often criminals, were committed there, said Mr Reed, and there was no doubt that they very often came out worse than they went in. His Honor observed that large numbers of them were frequently victims of heredity, and their surroundings. Mr Reed suggested that if a sound flogging were administered to the youth in question it would probaoly do him as much good asanything else. He was unable, however, to quote any authority other than that it was the custom for magistrates in dealing with such ca&es in the lower Court to order floggings. His Honor replied that if he ordered a flogging, and he were not empowered to do so, the constable who excuted the order would be liable to be proceeded against. "I should not be answerable," concluded His Honor, "but he might." The prisoner was admitted to probation to a period of two years.
