HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE

The Department of Industries and Commerce hns received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 12th June : The mutton market is overstocked and depressed, and it not likely to recover from the depression for some time. Arrivals January to May, 779,473 carcases more than at the same time last year, and large shipments expected. Canterbury brands are quoted at 3Jd to 2Jd per 1»\ according to quality, and North Island 2|d to 2Jd per lb. j .. The lamb market is weak and inj active, and excess arrivals total 495,835. The weather lately as been very favourable to the sale of lamb, and arrivals are likely to be heavy. Canterbury lamb is quoted at 4|d to 54d per lb. North Island 4£d to 3£d per lb, and Australian 3|d per lb. . The beef market is firm owing to a good demand. Supplies of American chilled beef are small. New Zealand hinds are quoted at 4£d per lb and fores at 3d per lb. There is a better demand for butter, and the market is quiet but firm. On account of bad weather the Home and Continent supplies are smaller. New Zealand choicest is quoted at 105s per cwt. Australian 100s, Danish Ills, Siberian 100s. The cheese market is quiet with a tendency in favour of buyers. Some holders are forcing sales. New Zealand white is quoted at 63s and coloured at 64s per cwt. The hemp market is very quiet, with nothing doing. New Zealand good fair grade, on spot, £23 per ton; New Zealand fair grade, on spot, £2l 10s; fair current Manila, on spot, £22; June to August shipments —New Zealand good fair grade £22 10s; New Zealand fair grade, £2l 10s; fair current Manila, £2l 10s per ton. Manila output, 39,000 bales. Buyers are not keen to do business in cocksfoot seed, and the market is very dull. si^S?S'4 The kauri gum market is quite but firm. Ordinary fair to three-quarter scraped, 1655; fair half-scraped, 10l5s; fair half to three-quarter scraped, 90s; pickings, common to good, 50s; fair to good pale and amber scraped., 1455. The hop market is quiet, but holders are firm. The market is affected by crop reports, and there is every prospect of an advance, i Best English is quoted at 753, med- j ium 455, Amderican 60s.
