PAHIATUA NEWS.

(From Oar Resident Reporter). Thursday. The Church of Christ was well filled last evening, by an appreciative audience, the occasion being a concert inaugurated by the lady members of the Church. A capital programme of vocal and musical items was rendered, the following ladies and gentlemen taking part:—Pianoforte duets, Misses Manifold, Boyd and Checkley (2); songs by Mrs Burgess, Miss Little and Messrs Manifold (encored), Hawkins (encored), Burgess and Green. Miss . Stormont and Mr Prydo each gave recitations, and a humourous reading was given by Mr Dallaston. -Vliss M. Allen had to respond to a vigorous encore for a violin solo and an organ solo was,played by Miss Allen on an organ just purchased for the use of tha Church, the instrument, an American organ, having u very fine tone. r J. hree-glees were sung by the Glee Party, Mrs Burgess, Misses M. Allen and Burgess, and Messrs Manifold and Burgess. The accompaniments during the evening were played by Mis Allen and Miss Burgess. made an energetic secretary. The name of the successful tenderer for groceries to the Pahiatua Hospital for the ensuing tvvelve months is Mr L. Feist. Information received from Woodville this afternoon, states that the Senio football match between Woodville and Excelsiors, played there yesterday, resulted in a .win for Woodville by 6 points to 3. The Pahiatua Gun Club have decided to allocate the nandsame silver cup, presented by Messrs Whyte and Mackay, to the member obtainng the highest score in six matches, covering a period of two years. The first "shoot" for-this valuable trophy, which is on view in a local tobacconist's window, will take place on June 23rd, and as considerable ■enthusiasm is already being displayed by the members, no doubt some good. ' scores will be recorded. Presbyterian Church service will be held at Hukanui un Sunday next at 2.30 p.m. The free use of the Telephone . Representatives of the Pahiatua County Council and Borough Council were present at the opening ceremony of the Lower Gorge bridge yesterday. The road through the gorge is, however, not fit for vehicular traffic owing to several large slips in the lower end, but I understand that the road in the Pahiatua County's portion of the gorge is in good order. g There is some talk of reforming the Pahiatua Mounted Rifles. The following team will represent Pahiatua against Hamua on the Recreation Ground on Saturday: Foss (2), Hall (2), Yule (2), Swainwon, WeatberJey, Fairbrother, Zillwood, Jacques, Collins, Morrison, Eccleton, .Short; emergencies, Heberley, Jolly, Smith. matches amongst the school teams for the school shield presented by the Bush Rugby Union •will start on Saturdav next.
