CARTERTON NEWS.
(From Our Resident Reporter.) Thursday. The funeral of Mrs Malcolm McGilvray, of Wellington, took place at the Clareville Cemetery this afternoon, the cortege being a large one. A" number of beautiful wreaths covered the casket, and the Church of England service at the grave was conducted by the Rev. * R. Young, vicar of St. Mark's. The Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr A. Armstrong) presiding. The estimates of receipts and expenditure for the ensuing year weie considered and approved. It was decided to allow the general rate and water rate to remain the same as last year. Two amendments for an increased general rate were defeated, and an amendment favouring a reduction in the water rate met with the same fate. A section of the local Rifle Volunteers has been formed at Dalefield, Sergeant F. Morgan being in command. If the young men of Dalefield and Matarawa banded together they should be strong enough numerically to form a company of their own. At a meeting of Loyal Heart of Oak x Lodge, L0.0.F.,M.U., last evening, a letter of recommendation was authorised for Bro. P. Smith to enable him to be placed on the doctor's list at Masterton. It was decided to challenge the Foresters' Lodge to a card tournament for Joune 24th. P.G. Bro. R. Butler was nominated for the office of N.G for next term, and P.G. Bro Fensham to that of V.G. Prior to leaving the Central Store for Gisborne, Mr Goldsmith, of the grocery department, was the recipient of a handsome travelling rug from the employees. The many friends of Mr P. A. Erickson, of Carterton, will regret to hear that he is an inmate of the South Wairarapa Hospital, suffering from an injured leg.
