Mr A. R. Guinness has been reelected Speaker of the House of .Representatives. Mr D. C. Henderson, of the MarBranch of the Bank of Zealand, has beer, transferred to Hwellington June 21st the Very Rev. Father ' Keogh, who is about to vacate the xectorship of St. Patrick's College, Wellington, to take charge cf the Hastings parish, will be entertained by the laity in Wellington. The death occurred at Auckland on Wednesday night, as the result of an operation, of Mrs Harley* George, daughter of Dr. Gore Gillon, formerly of Wellington. The deceased was only 23 years of age. Mr E. W. Baxter, chief clerk at the Terrace Prison, Wellington, has been transferred to Mount Eden, Auckland, in a similar capacity. Warder Leggett, of the Wellington Prison, has been promoted chief clerk at Wellington, vice Mr P-axter. Both officers are well-known and popular. Mr A. Matheson, whi with Mis Matheson has been spending a m'x , months' furlough in New Zealand, left Palmerstnn North for South ' Africa yesterday. Since the war Mr Matheson has been master of the public school at Bethel, in the Transvaal. The death is reported at Palmer- I aton North of relict of the I late Mr W. L. Hirst, an early settler, ; who arrived at Wellington in 1854, | and established a tannery busi- J ness at Kaiwarra. Mrs Hirst was *" most esteemed in Palmerston North for her benevolence and charity.
