AUSTRALIA V. HAMPSHIRE. WIN FOR VISITORS. United Press Association-By Electric Telegrap Copyright. Received June 9, 9.40 a.m. LONDON, June 8. On play being resumed in the Australian Hampshire match at Southampton to-day, the weather was summerlike, but the wicket was difficult. The attendance numbered about a thousand. The Australians' innings was little more than a procession, no one, excepting 'M'Alister, being able to withstand the bowling of Newman, who captured the whole of the eight wickets, the other two men being run out. He took seven wickets for 24, finishing with eight for 43. The third and fourth wickets fell at 39. M'Alister and Armstrong carried the total to 61, then Armstrong was taken at slip off a rising ball. Newman got rid of Gregory and Macartney in the same over. Six wickets were down for 71, and seven for 75- M'Alister played a plucky g&me, lasting 40 minutes, his departure leaving the score eight for 82.
Hartigan added a single. Laver, the last man, hit the first ball sent him into Remnant's hands at mid-or>. The innings occupied altogether 75 minutes, the players being at the wickets to-day for 50 minutes. The pitch was most treacherous. Scores: — AUSTRALIANS.—Forst Innings. He finished with an average of seven wickets for 27, and it would * <ve been even better had all the cha* es been accepted. When the sixth wcket fell he had five to his credit for 16. The former was dismissed after getting four runs, but Bardsley kept his end up, and when he was joined by Armstrong the runs came merrily. Trumper sent up a skyer, and Newman running from the slips took a good catch. One for 17. When seven more had been added Noble played Newman on. The fielding was smart. The Bards* ley-Armstrong partnership lasted 65 minutes, and carried the total to 101 before the third wicket fell. The century took iusfc 100 minutes to compile. Bardsley gave a sound, skilful and admirable exhibition. The batsman was assisted by the uneven bowling. The fuurth wicket went for 139, Llewellyn snapping up Armstrong at mid-off. He batted for 95 minutes, and gave a splendid display. He made a sixer, and nine fours. Gregory and Macalist°r added the balance of the runs. Gregory was missed in the slips when he had made I 12.
