PRESENTATION TO MR J CANDY.
FROM MASTERTON ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY.
A pleasing little ceremony took place among the members o the Mastertn Orchestral Society at the Town Hall, last evening, during the interval in the concert. Mr H, Inns said that it was the first concert of the season, and also the first time their new conductor. Mr Purcell Webb, had conducted the orchestra in public. Mr J. Candy had, prior to this, occupied the position of conductor temporarily and it was to express their appreciation of that gentleman's services that they were assembled together Mr Candy had always taken the keenest interest in the welfare of the Society, no matter in what sphere and the speaker described him as the "pillar" of the institution. The members thought they could; not let Mr Candy retire from the temporary position of conduc or which he had so generously undertaken without showing in some degree their appreciation of his valuable services. Mr Inns then asked Mr Candy to accept a very handsome silver mounted salad bowl, suitably inscribed. Messrs J. Barrett, M. R. Varnham and F. J. Hunn also referred in eulogistic terms to the valuable assistance Mr Candy had rendered the Society during the many years he had been associated with it. Mr Candy, in acknowledging the presentation, said he was completely taken by surprise. He could assure all those present he deeply appreciated their kind and thoughtful action. In conclusion, he referred to the good feelings that had always existed among the members, and he could safely say that matters could not possibly have run more smoothly since the Society was inaugurated.
