NATIVE HEALTH DEPARTMENT. The Native Heallh Department has, as as anticipated would be the case, come under the retrenchment scheme of the Government, and is to be abolished. Dr. Pomare, Native Health Officer, ho has occupied that position since the establishment of the Department in 1900, will retire from the service in a few weeks, and the ten .sanitary inspectors will receive notice .of retirement very shortly. It is probable that after concluding his connection with the department, Dr. Pmare will take a trip Home prior to starting in business on his own account. LINKING UP OUR KOADS. The final step in an important road linking scheme was taken by the Masterton County Council yesterday, when it was decided to proceed with the connecting of'.Colombo road and Cockburn streets, across Kuripuni street. This will complete a comprehensive scheme, which had for one of its objects the easing of town thoroughfares from droving traffic, and especially Kuripuni street, which was a very narrow street when the scheme was firs' formulated. Stock can now be taken in a very direct line from Te Ore Ore load right on to South road, and so to the arterial county thoroughfares. PRIVATE TELEPHONE LINES The management of private telephone lines was a matter before the Masterton County Council yesterday. Mr N. H. James, Secretary of the Masterton Private Telephone Company, wrote to the Masterton County Council yesterday asking the Council to discuss the matter of moving in the direction of obtaining legislative power to frame by-laws to control the working of private telephone lines, or to delegate their power to a committee appointed by the Council. Cr Toogood stated that it was becoming a very necessary thing now for something to be done in the direction asked by the letter, as there was a danger of the lines becoming beyond control. The lines were becoming very numerous in this district. He moved that the Government be asked to legislate to give loial bodies power to control private telephone lines, to frame bylaws in connection therewith, and to sue for amounts due by the subscribers. Other Councillors concurred hat such legislation was desirable, and the motion was carried unanimously.
