PAHIATUA NEWS.
(From Oar Resident Reporter). Saturday. PAHIATUA COUNTY COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Pahiatua County Council was held to-day. ■ There were present: Mr Thos. Hodgina (Chairman), Crs S. Bolton, T. Quirk, A. Barrel], A. Ross. H. Cornelius, H. Coom and J. D. Piper. An acknowledgment was received from the Department of Hospitals and Charitable Aid, of the protest made by the Pahiatua County Council, against the contribution required by the Wellington and Wairarapa Charitable Aid Board. Mr W, J. Moore, Makuri, wrote re a method of river protection as carried out by Mr W. Mills, of Cheltenham and advising Council to inspect some of the work done. The leiter was received. Cr Bolton, speaking on the subject, stated that the protective work carried out by the Government in the Manawatu river ' was the best and most effective he '- had ever seen. ■ The Pahiatua County Council's share of contribution to the Waira- " * rapa District Hospital Board amounts > to £436 17s for the year. This amount, the . Chairman stated, was £229 more than itnt var, a:d equalled 2s 8d in the £ on the revenue of the Council. The Health Inspector reported the general health of the County to be satisfactory. « The Chairman reported on the visit of the deputation to Wellington to interview the Minister about the *' Mangahao river overflow at Marima bridge, and stated that a promise had been made to send up an engineer to inspect and report on the matter. *" It was mentioned that the Govern- ' ment had spent £6O on Tylee's ford at Makuri, and £SO was still required to complete the work. It was stated that the "settlers intended to take up a subscription for this purpose, and Cr Bolton, on behalf of the Ma-kuri-Pongaroa Dairy Company, pro--1 mised £5.
from" residents of Mangamaire waited on the Council and asked that the unformed portion of Mangamaire road (about 62 chains) be formed and metalled so as to be in readiness to allow milk suppliers to take their milk to the cheese factory about to be erected. It was decided to grade and form the above piece of road, which is a connecting link between Ko/iini road and Tutaekara road. The matter of a public hall site at Kohunui was left over pending a report oh the site from the member of the riding. A general rate of 1£ in the £ was struck on the Pukemiku and Mar.gaone ridings, and 1£ in the £on the Makuri, Mangahao and Fuketci ridings. Accounts -amounting to £1,734 2s 8d as recommended by the Finance Committee', were passed for payment. The sum of £lO was voted for the purpose of issuing summonses ratepayers whose rates had not been paid. It was decided that in future the Council charge the Akitio County Council current rates for all work done by the Council. Mr Cornelius gave notice of motion' "That Riding A maintain the main road from Mangatainoka to the Mangahao river, and that Riding C maintain the main road from the Borough boundary to the Eketahuna County boundary. A discussion took place re the readjusting of the boundaries to the various ridings, but no action was taken.
GENERAL. The Pahiatua Debating Society met last evening in the Foresters' Hall. The question "Is New Zealand Right in Offering a Dreadnought?" was fully discussed, Messrs Green and Dallaston taking the affirmative, and Messrs Eames and Taylor the negative. On a vote being taken at the conclusion of the debate, the majority decided in favour of the affirmative. At the Mart, this afternoon, C. R. Mitchell and Co. submited 80 acres of Maori lease, situated between Pahiatua and Ballance. Bidding went up to £l9 10s per acre, but no sale was effected, the reserve price not being reached. Football matches in connection ■with the Bush Rugby Union were postponed to-day owing to the inclement weather.
$ A run of the Woodlands Hunt Club was held over Mr T. Mexted's
property this afternoon. Although the weather was unpleasant a large number of sportsmen took part in the hunt. At a meeting of the Pahiatua Chamber of Commerce last night, it was resolved that a letter be sent to the Minister for Railways asking him to delay the train leaving Masterton at 6 p.m. till after the arrival of the Wellington train at Masterton, .-at 8.15 p.m., and that the member for the district endeavour to have the same adhered to.
