CARTERTON NEWS.
From Our Resident Reporter. Saturday,
The County Council road grader has been at work on a number of the roads in the Borough. Mr E. Bouland, formerly a cadet in the local railway station, is now filling a similar position at Ohakune. At the public meeting convened last evening for the purpose of passing a resolution on the question of compulsory military training, Mr A. Armstrong, Mayor, presided. The following resolutions were carried unanimously:—"That notwithstanding the enthusiasm of the volunteers, the voluntary system does not provide adequate means of defence, and we therefore ask the Government to introduce a system of universal military training of the young men." "That this meeting realises the im-' portanco of the Imperial Conference to be held shortly ir. London, and expresses the hope that the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, may be enabled to accept the invitation to represent this Dominion." "That this meeting desires to heartily endorse the patriotic action of Sir Joseph Ward in making the offer to the Imperial Government to provide a battleship of the Dreadnought type (or, if need be two), as 'he gift of the people of the Dominion of New Zealand, and that the meeting realises that the offer was made as an earnest proof of the desire of New Zealand to help the Motherland in time of need."
