SCHOOL SYLLABUS. The matter of the school syllabus occupied the attention of the members of the Auckland City Schools' Committee at its last meeting. The chairman (Mr P. S. N. Caudin) said that there was no doubt that the syllabus was very much overloaded at present, with the result that the headmasters did not get a chance to really educate the children. Quoting ; from a timetable in use at one of the schools under the jurisdiction of the committee, he mentioned that fifty minutes per week was allowed to the study of history, commercial geography occupied one hour per week, <»nd so on; subjects of vital importance receiving but scant attention. "Teaching seems to have got more showy," he concluded, "but it is not so solid as it used to be." After discussion it was resolved "That, in the opinion of this committee, the present syllabus is much overloaded, and should be revised and simplified, with a view to giving more time to the teaching of the elementary and necessary subjects of education."
