DEMANDS OF LABOUR.
By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 2. The demands of general labourers on certain local bodies was considered by the Onehunga Borough Council, when the Mayor stated that, if conceded, the Onehunga drainage scheme would be seriously affected. The estimate forcarrying out the work had been based on present wages rates, and would not allow of the demanded increase. He contended that men employed by local bodies permanently at 8s a day were better off than casual hands at 9s per day. The present demand, if given effect to, would mean the holding up of the drainage proposal.
Mr A. Holmes considered <"hat the continual demands of labour would soon "kill the goose with the goWen egg." He favoured a good living wage, but there must be a safe margin to work within. The labour question must level itself in time.
The Mayor said that the workers for outside local bodies were satisfied, but in the city a few agitators were making a noise.
