PUTTING ON THE BRAKE.
Speaking to a Hokitika deputation, the Hop. J. A. MiJlar said he did not believe in spending money merely for the sake of doing so. The country had been going ahend' rapidly of late years, and the Government had done a good deal where private enterprise should, have stepped in. That class of expenditure increased the debt per head of the population, and this fact was quoted against them. Such an argument would eventually tell against the credit of the country. The Government, of course, had no intention of going back on its policy, but they were face to face with a problem. There was a financial stringency, and it was their duty to look carefully into the pusition, minimise the expenditure and go slow.
