MASTERTON COLLIE CLUB.

ANNUAL DOG TRIALS. The seventh annual dog trials under the auspices of the Masterton Collie Club commenced yesterday morning, at Te Ore Ore. Ideal weather prevailed, and there was a good attendance ofjhe public. The trials were held for the first time on Mr Walter Cameron's property, and both the judge and the competitors expressed themselves highly pleased with the grounds. The work done by the majority oi the dogs was of a high order, and considerable interest was taken in the proceedings.. The sheep were kindly lent by Mr C. J. Bennett, and they gave entire satisfaction. The following is the result of the heading, bringing back and holding (open) competition, about 600 yards; time allowed, 12 minutes; points, heading 10, bringing back 8, command 8, holding 4. First prize, £7 and Mr F. S. Cooper's gold medal; second, £5; third, £2; fourth, Harcombe and Donald's trophy value 7s 6d; fifth, F. B. Kosson's trophy value ss. There were 36 entries MrR. Grant's Tip; heading 8, bringing back 8, command 8, holding 3; total, 27 1 Mr J. G, Sutherland's Gyp, 9, 6. 8, 2; total, 25 2 Mr J. G. Sutherland's Lubra, 8, 6, 8, 2; total, 24 3 Mr J. G. Sutherland's Fan, 8, 7, . 6, 2; total, 23 4 Mr F. W. Jones' Bounce, 8, 6, 6, 1; total, 21 5 Mr R. Grant's Rock, 10, 4, 5, 1; total, 20 6

JUDGE'S COMMENTS. Tip—Cast to the right; went out freely, but headed rather rashly; brought back on a fair line, and did fair work at ring; would have done better, but one of the sheep was weak. Gyp—Cast to the right; went out on a fair line, and headed nicely; split sheep when coming down hill; they came together again, but then had to force them on to the flat; sheep got once out of ring. Lubra—Cast to the right; went out fairly well, and headed almost out of sight; brought back on good line under good command, but did some unnecessary work and was slack at ring.

Fan —Cast to the left; went out on a nice line until near the sheep ; ran too close on heading; brought back on a fair line, but rather fast; did not show much style at ring. Bounce—Cast to the left; beaded well, but rather far above sheep; led sheep too far to the right; come very quietly to the ring, but showed no style there. Rock—Went out to the left; headed well; come rather fast a little after the start; split the shjep and one got away, but brought to2tsther again and just got into the ring when time was up.

The B competition, wh'.ch was part of the previous event, and run under th 3 same conditions, but was open only to competitors residing within the boundaries of the Wairarapa an 3 Masterton electoral districts. First prize, £5; second prize, £3; third prize, £2; fourth prize, Townsand andj Cowper's trophy, value 7s 6d; fifth prize, Inns and Goddard's trophy, value 5s: — Mr F. W. Jones' Bounce, 8, 6, 6, 1; total. 21 1 Mr M. Mcßae's Bruce, 7, 7, 6, 1; total, 19 2, Mr F. W. Jones' Jack, 6, 5, 7, 1; total, 19 2 Mr F. W. Jones' Wattie, 8, 4, 6, 1; total, 19 2 Mr D. G. McDonald's Plaidie, 6, 5, 6, 1; total, 18 5 The three winners who tied for second place divide the second, third and fourth prize money. The judge, Mr W. McKenzie, of Porangahau. in conversation with a representative of the Age, said he was delighted with the grounds, and! considered them ideal for-aheep dog trials.. The trials will be continued this morning, commencing at eight o'clock.
