THE NEW GASWORKS, COUNCILLORS MAKE AN UNOFFICIAL VISIT. Yesterday afternoon an unofficial visit of inspection- was paid to the new Municipal Gasworks by several of the Councillors. The party consisted of Crs J as. Elliott (Chairman of the Committee), F. W. Temple, J. H. Pauling, T. G. Hoar, W. Pragnell and J. Prentice. The Councillors were then shown over, the building by the Gas Manager (Mr J. W. Blackmail), and all present expressed themselves highly pleased with the structure. Cr Elliott, at the conclusion of the inspection,'made a'few remarks. He apologised for the absence of the Mayor (Mr P. L. Boilings), who was attending the District Court sitting, and Crs Rigg and Ewington. The speaker explained gthat the meeting was quite an unofficial one. The new gasworks which they had just inspected, were in the speaker's opinion, as up-to-date as any in New Zealand, and Masterton's future was well provided for, Referring to the construction of the building he said it was a credit to both the architects (Messrs Varnham and Rose) and the contractors (Messrs Coradine and Whittaker). Mr J. W. Blackman briefly outlined the events tfaat led up to the construction of the present works, while the question was under consideration as to whether the Bannister street works should be added to, he received instructions from the Council to rejport on the advisableness of erecting works on the present site. This he did, the report was adopted, and the present works erected. The work would not exceed the estimates. The official opening of the works would not eventuate until the installation of the plant was effected. In conclusion, he thanked the architects fcr the assistance they had given him during the construction of the building. Mr E. J. Rose thanked those present for the kind remark- 0 as to his part of the work in connection with the building. CrJ. Prentice also spoke a few words, and the gathering dispersed.
