' (From Our Resident Reporter). 'Wednesday. % An exciting game of football was played at Pongoroa on Saturday last, when the local team met their first defeat at the hands of Rakanui. Pongaroa started well and attacked for some time. Towards the end of the spell, F. West snapped up the ball and passing out to G. West, the latter scored. No goal resulted from the kick. In the second half by good following up the Pongoroa line was again in danger, and from a loose forward Harmen scored the second try for Rakanui, Harris' kick at goal being futile. The later stages of the game was noticeable for the number of free kicks given against the visitors, and Sankey made several good but ineffectual attempts to put the leather over the bar. No further score resulted. Rakanui being victorious by six points to nil. The visiting pack played a good game, and in the backs, H. and F. West did splendid work. The Pongaroa forwards also played a very willing game Alderwick un the wing, and Stephenson behind the scrum were in a class by themselves. At times during the play some very neat passing was ed amonst the backs on both sides. Mr G. Haines was referee. The contest for the O'Dciwd banner now • lies between the two above teams, and great interest is being taken in the result of the final match. Messrs Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report on their Pahiatua sale of 25th instant as follows:—We had an exceptionally good yarding of sheep, totalling i-early 3,000, a large proportion of which were wethers of good quality for which we had strong competition, other classes of sheep also sold well. The yarding • of cattle was up to advertised numbers, and prices were on a par with last week's rates. We quote:—2 and 4-tooth wethers in good forward condition, lis to lis 7d; 2-tooth 9s to 103 lOd; sound mouth ewes in lamb, lis sd; full-mouth ewes in lamb, 6s 6d to 8s 6d; dry ewes, 7s to8s; store ewes. 4s 3d to 4s 9d; wether lambs, 7s sd; ewe lambs, 8s sd; good mixed lambs, 6s 6d to 8s sd; others, 4s 3d to 5s 6d. Threeyear steers, £4 7s 6d; 2-year steers, £3 3s: fat cows, £3 8s to £4 8s 6d for heavy weights; fat heifers, £3 Is; speyed heifers, £2 ss; springing heifers, 3-year-olds, £4 to £5 2s Gd; heifers in calf, £3;' storo cows, £1 6s to £1 lOs; forward cows, £2 4s to £2 12s; cows in calf, £1 15s; yearling heifers, £1 Us; good weaners, 275. A pretty wedding was celebrated at St. Paul's Church by 'the Rev. Chalmers Mill this afternoon, the contracting parties being Mr Sidney J. Weatherley, eldest son of Mr S. R. Weatherley, of Rakanui, and Miss Clemence A. Libeau, eldest daughter of Mrs M. Libeau. of Scarborough. The bride, who was given away by her brother, was dressed in cream silk with hat to match, and wore the orthodox veil and orange blossoms, and carried a shower bouquet. The bridesmaids, Miss H. Libeau, and the Misses E. and V. Weatherley, were dressed in cream silk cashmere, with hats to match. Mr H. Weatherley acted as best man. After the ceremony the bridal party and about fifty guests partook of a sumptuous wedding breakfast at the residence of the bride's mother, and a social in" honour of the occasion was held in the Scarborough school in the evening. In the District Court to-day, before his Honor Judge Haselden, a libel action was-heard, brought by Charles Lassen against Patrick McCafferty, claiming- £250 damages. After hearing considerable evidence, the jury brought in a verdist for plaintiff for £SO. The annual meeting of the Bush Districts Agricultural and Pastoral Association will be held in the Foresters' Hall, Woodville, on Friday, June 4th. It is expected that either the Premier or the Hon. J. A. Millar will be present at the complimentary social to be tendered to Mr R. B. Ross, M.P., next week.
HOCKEY.
The Kctoroa and Konini ladies clubs met on the local ground this afternoon, and after> very fast game the maten was won by Konini by 1 goal to nil. Mss Stewart, who played a £?ood game, succeeded in shooting a goal fur the winners. Misses Stone
and R. Warren also played well tor the winners, while for the losers the Misses K. Hughes, Allen, Manifold and Malcolm were conspicuous for good play. Mr White-Scott was referee.
