THE Wairarapa Age MORNING DAILY. TUESDAY, MAY 25, 1909. TRUST LANDS TRUST ELECTION.
Tha fact that the number of nominations exceeds those of the vacancies on the Masterton Trust Lands is evidence to, at least, some extent that there are Trust voters who take an interest in Trust affairs, and that there are voters who desire to see'an alteration in the personnel of the Trust as constituted up to the present contest. Of the three retiring members, who are seeking re-election, Mr C. E. Daniell has the chief claim for support at the hands of tha voters. For very many years Mr Daniell has worked hard and faithfulty, and has rendered valuable services during the long period that he has sat upon the Trust. His energy remains unabated, and his goodwill to be of service to the community is, we feel sure, as keen as ever. The return of Mr Daniell is, of course, certain, and we expect to see him head the poll. Mr T. Wagg is another old servant of the public in the capacity of a member of the Trust, It is eleven years ago since Mr Wagg was first elected, and his lengthy experience renders him thoroughly conversant with any question that is likely to arise, while the public have considerable confidence in his judgment. Mr E. G. Eton, who is also, seeking re-election, has served on other public bodies, and is now a member of several other institutions. He is seeking re-election to the Trust for a second tijme. The new candidates to enter the field are Messrs Eli Smith and Henry Evans. The former has had much experience of local body work, and the many, and at times, somewhat intricate questions that are involved in such duties. Mr Smith was for many years a member, and at one time chairman, of that very responsible local body, the Masterton County Council, and when its jurisdiction extended over an area much larger than is now the case. Mr H. Evans, a popular Upper Plain resident, is Chairman of the Fern ridge School Committee, and takes a
keen interest i.i educational matters. The Small Farm Settlement District extends ior some distance up the Upper Plain, and there is a feeling among settlers in the district that they would like to see "a country member" on the Trust. On the Upper Plain Mr Evans wiil poll well, but he will be at softie disadvantage in not being so well known in town. We trust, however, if Mr Evans is not returned that the support that will be accorded to him will be sufficient to induce him to offer his services on some future occasion. In conclusion we would remark that it is to be hoped that the polling on Thursday next will be indicative of the degree of interest that the voters of the Trust Lands Trust should take in the most valuable endowment that the town enjoys.
