I Noble won tne toss, and the Australians went in on a fast wicket. j Hartigan and Bardsley opened the a batting. The former was caught in s the first over. Bardsley gave a j. chance at the wickets when the score t was 4. JNoble played Fielder on. Bardsley's defence was uncertain at the start, but improved. He batted 100 minutes before being dismissed. Ransford gave a short but bright display of fine cutting. The third wicket fell for 73, and the fourth for 108. Armstrong was missed in the slips j by Relf when he had scored a dozen. Buckenham, in the next over, bowled , Trumper with a yorker for a duck. Five for 108. j After lunch Armstrong was missed i by Relf at point off Tarrant's first over. Macartney, who joined him, playing judiciously, hit five fourers, and the pair in 45 minutes added 50. Then the Sydneyite, who had shown excellent cricket, was bowled by Thompson. His score included eight fourers. Armstrong had batted 100 minute s when, in hooking a short ball from ( Thompson, he played it on to his wicket. The sixth wicket was down for 175, and the seventh for an additional run. Thompson had the batsmen beaten. He resumed at 174, and secured five wickets for an additional ten runs to his reckoning.
