(From Our Resident Reporter). Thursday. The social inaugurated by the lady friends of the members of the Pahiatua Fire Brigade took place in the Olympic Theatre last evening There was a good attendance. Dancing was kept going till an early hour in the morning to good music supplied by JMr Hicks, Mr C. Mills playing an extra. During the evening vocal Items were nicely rendered by Miss Craig, and Mr G. Mills. A good supper was supplied by the ladies, and a -most enjayable evening was spent by those present. Mr J. Wilds made a capable" M.C. The Ladies Committee, of* whom Miss Mcßratney was secretary, are deserving of a word of praise, as the funds of the brigade will considerably benefit by the social. Arrangements for the social to be tendered to Mr R. B. Ross, M.P., are well in hand, and the social promises to be~a very large function. I understand that the opening of the Lower Gorge bridge, will take place on the same day, and it is probable that the Ministers and members attending that ceremony will attend Mr Koss' social in the evening. This afternoon Messrs T. Hodgins (Chairman of the Pahiatua County Council), and R. Smith and H. Cornelius, members of the Mangahao riding, together with several settlers from Marima, journeyed to Wellington to interview the Minister, with regard to the recent encroachment of the Managhao river at the Marima bridge, and which is threatening the safety of the bridge. A social in aid of the funds of the. Pahiatua Brass Band is to be Jheld at an early date, , The sum of £350 was paid out to-day to the suppliers of the Makuri-Pongaroa Dairy Company. This Company will close down for the season about the end Jof next week. Mr C. C. Bluett, eldest son of Mr C. A. Bluett, was entertained at a social evening at Scarborough on Tuesday last prior, to his leaving the district. Mr Bluett-'left for Auckland on Wednesday. The Woodvllle Senior football team journeyed to' Dannevirke on Wednesday, and were defeated by Excelsiors by 8 to nil. At the same place a hard fought game between the Dannevirke and Aotea Seniors ended in a draw, each side scoring three points.
In all probability a free ballot for £3OO, in connection with the Starr Bowkett Society, will take place within the next two months. Last night at a general meeting of the Society, held in Mr W. I. Husband's office, Mr Lester was the successful- tenderer for £2OO at £2O 10s per £IOO. Since the formation ot the Society the sum of £3,017 has been lent out.
The following football team will represent Pahiatua against Konini Recreation Ground, on Saturday next: (2), Morrison, Yule (2), Heberley, Short, Swainson, Singleton, Zillwood, Weatherley; Hall (2), Reeve, Fairbrother. Mangatainoka play Hamua, on the Domain Ground, and will be represented by the following:—Sharp, H. Cowan, Smeaton, W. Cade, Mexted, Dungan (2), Lyle, Vowell, Cresswell, Harvey (3),. Murphy, Pilkington. Club are not certain of putting a Senior team in the field this season, and if this is so, Nireaha will have a bye.
During the past three weeks Mr W. I. Husband, land agent, has disposed of the following properties:— Mr Taucher's L' 42 acres at Ballance to Mr Carey; also, 100 acres at Clareville to Mr Taucher; Mr J. Blade's 150 acres, Clareville,. to Mr J. Shanks, Nikau; and Mr J. McQuinn's 200 acres at Waimira to Mr Holmes, of Eketahuna. The annual meeting of the directorsof the Pahiatua Farmers' Association will be held on Tuesday next. Crutching operations are in full swing all over the district.
