SPECULATION IN FOOD STUFFS.
LEGISLATION ASKED FOR. Received May 20, 8.55 p.m. MELBOURNE. May 20. A deputation from the Trades Hall Gouncil asked the Minister of Customs to impose an export duty on wheat, and butter, so as to prevent exportation and increased prices. Th?y urged that speculators should be stopped from forcing up prices. 'lhepsople reaped no benefit from bounteous seasons; the speculators alone benefited. The Minister, in reply, considered that the Government should keep sufficient products in the country to prevent the raising of prices, promised to. submit the matter to Cabinet. If investigations showed that the producer was not getting a fair share, and the consumer paying too much it might help the Government to solve a knotty problem.
